가리왕산은 강원도 정선군 북평면과 평창군 진부, 대화, 미탄면에 연한 해발 1,560m의 고산으로서 계곡이나 능선은 완만하나 숲이 울창해서 장엄한 산세를 유지한다. 정상에서는 동해가 바라다 보인다. 음지에서는 박달나무, 거제수나무가 군락을 이루고 양지쪽으로는 신갈나무, 전나무들이 밀생해 있으며 그 아래 계곡에는 얼음치, 열목어, 산천어가 서식하고 있다. 이른봄 언땅을 헤치고 피는 얼레지, 양지꽃 군락은 가히 장관을 이룬다.
