계방산은 오대산에서 서쪽으로 달리다 우뚝솟은 해발 1,577m의 고산으로 홍천군 내면과 평창군 진부면에 걸쳐 있고 차령산맥의 허리부분에 위치한다. 피나무, 고로쇠나무 거목사이로 우뚝솟은 전나무에 낀이끼는 태고의 신비를 전하고 산죽이 깔린 능선부위 주목군락 사이의 진달래와 철쭉이 한층 운치를 더한다. 구름도 쉬어간다는 운두령엔 운해가 잦고 깨끗한 물에만 서식하는 송어를 증식시킨 곳이기도 하다. 국유림에 특수활엽수조림단지가 조성되어 있다.

(Mt.)Gyebangsan, running westward from (Mt. )Odaesan, and abruptly stopped and uprised upto 1,577m in elevation, sits around the mid-point of (Mt. )Charyeongsan in range and extends into Nae-myeon, Hongcheon-gun and Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun of the Kangwon-do. The dense mosses, matted on needle firs that erect tall among the large trees of Amur linden and Painted maples, delivers the mystery of the old ages and Korean Rosebay and Smile Rosebay bunched etween communitis of Rigid-branch yew along the ridges covered by bamboos enhance the feeling of natural elegance. The sea of clouds could be frequently shown at the pass of Unduryung where clouds are said to take a long rest. Also trouts that inhabit only in very clear water have been breeded in this area and special broadleaved species have been planted in national forests.
