지리산은 소백산맥의 최남단에 솟아있는 해발 1,915m의 영산으로 전라남북도와 경상남도의 3개도에 걸쳐있다.
우리나라 12대 명산중에 하나로 산세가 웅장하고 규모가 크며, 1967년에 국립공원으로 지정되었다. 산록부에는 소나무, 서어나무, 중복부에는 졸참나무, 정상부에는 가문비나무, 구상나무 등이 자라고 있다.
화엄사찰중 제1위인 화엄사가 있고 천은사, 실상사, 쌍계사, 대원사, 법계사 등 수많은 사찰과 암자가 자연과 조화를 이루고 있다. 산자락의 백운산 서울대 연습림내에는 곰솔, 리기테다소나무 숲 등이 아름다운 모습을 자랑한다.

(Mt.) Girisan is a mountain with the elevation of 1,915m that is uprised at the southern tip of (Mt. )Sobaeksan range and extends into 3 Provinces of Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do.
One among the 12 Noted Mountains in Korea, this mountain was designated in 1967 as a National Park because of magnificent configuration and huge size. There are plant communities of Korean Red pine and Carpinus laxiflora at the bottom of the mountain, communities of Oriental white oak around the midslope, and communities of Yezp spruce and Korean fir at the summit area. Plenty of temples including Hwaumsa(temple), the first temple of the Buddhist branch, Choneunsa(temple), Shilsangsa(temple), Ssanggyesamsa(temple), Taewonsa(temple), Bupgyesa(temple) and so on are well harmonized with the surrounding natural environment. At the hillside there is the (Mt. )Baekunsan Experimental Forest of Seoul National
University, where forests of Black pine and Rigitaeda pine present the beautiful scenery.
